New England\u2019s second largest city has its first community \u201cmedia station\u201d, a term coined by Talkers Magazine<\/a>. Worcester Magazine<\/a>, the city\u2019s alternative newsweekly, has teamed with Unity Radio<\/a>, a community-focused online and\"Backbone<\/a> low-power FM (LPFM) radio station, to create \u201c\u00a0a joint venture unlike anything else in the Worcester media landscape\u201d. The station’s technology, unlike traditional stations resides in “the cloud”, virtualized \u2014 without physical hardware, bricks or mortar.<\/p>\n

The new media enterprise, which is based on all the elements of Backbone\u2019s Production Suite<\/a>\u2122, was \u201csoft-launched\u201d during the city\u2019s municipal elections November 7. The station intends to draw upon the resources of both WoMag and Unity\u2019s non-profit parent, Pride Productions<\/a>, as well as popular, local talk radio talents, like veteran morning host and news director Hank Stolz<\/a>.<\/p>\n

During election night, Unity Radio set up operations in Worcester City Hall\u00a0awaiting ballot counts, where they interviewed candidates (using Backbone Producer<\/a>\u2122), took listener phone calls (Backbone Talk<\/a>\u2122), and aired studio-quality remotes from reporters with smartphones around the city (Backbone Co-Host\u2122 with LUCI\u2122 Global<\/a>). The live production was streamed online (Backbone Radio<\/a>\u2122) and fed through a low-latency IP connection (Backbone Syndicate\u2122) from the cloud to Unity\u2019s new LPFM transmitter located several miles away.<\/p>\n
